This GoWesty Cruise Control Kit is designed to add cruise control to any Vanagon that did not come with factory cruise control. If your Vanagon came with genuine Volkswagen cruise control, this kit is not for you. Check out our Cruise Control OEM Replacement Kit instead.

Fits: All 1986-91 Vanagon models not originally fitted with OEM VW cruise control.
The cruise control unit mounts behind the glove box. It is an all-in-one assembly—very simple and serviceable for years to come. The system operates the throttle pedal directly via a clever and reliable cable system designed at GoWesty by Cal Poly engineers! The throttle pull-cable runs from the control unit behind the glove box through the grommets where the heater control cable passes, just forward of the shift lever, and pulls directly on the accelerator pedal linkage.

The GoWesty cruise gets a speed reading via a vehicle speed sensor (VSS) kit—included in this main kit—that gets the vehicle speed reading from one of the drive axles. We offer four different options depending on what transaxle and axle type you have. Plese see drop-down menus to select the right VSS for your Vanagon.

GoWesty cruise system includes a flush-mount cruise control switch you can mount in the location of your choice. Also included in the kit is one automatic transaxle (“AT”) OR two manual transaxle (“MT”) foot pedal canceling switch kits. Select your transaxle type via the drop down menus.

*If your speedometer has a screw-on speedometer cable, or a GoWesty Electronic GPS Speedometer, you will need to purchase our axle-mounted VSS system (part number GW-CV-VSS) to run cruise control.
Important Product Note & Disclaimer: This cruise control system is the most technologically advanced product available for a Vanagon. It is designed to reduce driver fatigue over long stretches of primarily flat highway. It is not wise to use cruise control in heavy traffic, in highly-populated areas, or on winding and/or hilly roads. It should also be noted that this system does not have the ability to upshift or downshift your vehicle, nor can it be expected to maintain your chosen vehicle speed at all times over all terrains. Given the fact that Vanagons are relatively underpowered, and feature non-electronically-controlled transaxles, there will be occasions where an incline is simply too steep for this cruise control system to maintain speed, and it will auto-disengage. This feature is designed to protect you and your vehicle and is an indication that the system is functioning properly. Not recommended for use under 45MPH.
