Do You Need an Updated Knock Controller?

To find out, just check the KNR readout on your ScanGauge—it should read zero most of the time. If you’re seeing a persistent non-zero reading, the first step is to double-check your base ignition timing—it might be set too far advanced.

If the timing is correct, your engine may be producing a subtle mechanical noise (like a slightly noisy lifter or loose piston) that’s inaudible to you but still enough to trigger a false knock reading. While these sounds are typically harmless, your stock knock controller may interpret them as real knock, causing the ECU to pull timing unnecessarily, which can hurt both power and efficiency.

This updated knock controller is much better at filtering out background noise, helping your engine maintain optimal performance without being fooled by phantom knock signals.
Note: These knock sensors are only for use with the GoWesty Fuel Injection System (GW-EFI), not the original Volkswagen fuel injection.
