The skid block, often referred to as the ‘plank’, is a crucial part of the F1® car’s underfloor. It was designed to regulate ride height and prevent excessive contact with the track and was first introduced to the sport in 1994.  

Typically made from a high-density wood laminate, the plank runs along the central section of the floor and serves as a wear indicator. If the wear is beyond the FIA’s legal limit, the car can be disqualified for running too low and gaining an advantage. F1® teams today carefully manage the skid block to optimise aerodynamics while staying within the regulations.  

This plank once ran on the underneath of Oscar Piastri’s MCL39, driven during the 2025 season. Oscar played a crucial role in ensuing McLaren F1® Team secured their back-to-back Constructors’ World Championship.
