Mercedes AMG Petronas 2019 Skid Plank Wall Art made from a genuine race-used Formula One® plank.
The skid block, often referred to as the ‘plank’, is a crucial part of the F1® cars underfloor. It was designed to regulate ride height and prevent excessive contact with the track and was first introduced to the sport in 1994. Typically made from a high-density wood laminate called Jabroc, the plank runs along the central section of the floor and serves as a wear indicator. If the wear is beyond the FIA’s legal limit, the car can be disqualified for running too low and gaining an advantage. F1® teams today carefully manage the skid block to optimise aerodynamics while staying within the regulations.
This plank once ran on the underneath of the Mercedes Petronas AMG W10 during the 2019 Formula One® season. A season in which Mercedes dominated the grid with 15 race wins across the two drivers’ as they went on to clinch both titles.
